Medical Complications of Bedsores
Untreated bedsores can lead to various medical complications, increasing both medical costs and time spent on recovery. There are several serious illnesses which can arise in conjunction with bedsores and the underlying conditions which led to the development of the bedsores initially. Because of this, it is important for anyone who suffers from bedsores, or who has a loved one who suffers from bedsores, to be particularly vigilant with regards to the development of new illnesses and injuries.
Of particular concern are those individuals who may suffer from a decrease in mobility due to bedsores and other factors. This lack of mobility, or an increase in sensory impairment may cause additional vulnerabilities to complications and further illness and/or injury. While every patient’s case is unique, there are several conditions which may commonly occur and these are covered within this section. While not all complications may directly stem from the development of bedsores, each of these conditions can be worsened by their presence. Additionally, the types of conditions which may develop will increase depending upon the severity of the bedsore any other underlying conditions.
Only a qualified medical professional can assess a patient’s risk for developing these complications as a result of the occurrence of bedsores. Therefore, it is important to talk with your physician if you have any concerns that you may be exhibiting symptoms that are listed here. Additionally, if you have a loved one who suffers from bedsores, then you may wish to ask his or her physician about the possibility of complications and what can be done to minimize the risks.
